How to use Zoom

You’ll receive an email to confirm the date and time of the Virtual Assessment Centre interview. This email will also contain a Zoom link you’ll need to use to join the event and an attachment with some technical information to refer to. Please read through this attachment very carefully. We’ve summarised the main points below.

You will need:

  • A device with a webcam or built-in camera (e.g. laptop or phone/tablet) that you’re familiar with and know how to use.
  • To sign up to Zoom and download it onto your device before your virtual Assessment Centre. This is free to do.
  • One of the compatible operating systems and browsers, details of which will be included in the email attachment and can also be found on the Recruitment Support Portal.
  • A stable, strong internet connection.

While not essential, we recommend that you use earphones/headphones (that have a microphone) and an external mouse if you’re using a laptop. We also encourage you to join a Zoom test meeting before the day. The Zoom Help Centre https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us has guides on fixing common technical difficulties in case you experience any.

Once you’ve joined your Zoom meeting these are the most common issues and how to resolve them:

  • Echoing – if you can hear your voice echoing then check that you only have one microphone turned on. If that doesn’t work, turn your speaker volume down or hold the microphone further away.
  • Others can’t hear me – check that your audio isn’t muted. If the microphone icon has a red line through it, you will just need to click that to unmute yourself.
  • I cannot hear others talking – your speakers/headphones may be turned off. First, check the settings on your device, then click the arrow next to the microphone on Zoom to select the correct speaker.
  • Others can’t see me – check your webcam is turned on. If there is a red line through the camera icon, click that to turn it on.
  • I cannot see others – use the chat function in Zoom to let them know this issue.
  • My internet cuts out – Zoom will freeze and hold you in the meeting until your internet connection is stable. If you completely disconnect, simply re-join the meeting using the same link.
