The Medical Check

The Medical Check takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and is conducted by a third-party provider called Health Partners. On the day, you’ll be met by a medical professional who will review your hearing, colour vision, mobility, and blood pressure.

These checks are important because there are several physical requirements you need to demonstrate to meet the legislative requirements to become a Security Officer in an airport. These requirements are all about your safety and ensuring that you’re able to ensure the safety of other people too, by correctly implementing security control measures.

These checks include:

  • Being able to read a vehicle number plate correctly at 23 meters distance and being able to read labels on bottles of spirits and aerosols at a distance between 30-50 centimeters – with or without glasses or contact lenses.
  • Having 100% colour perception, to use colour x-ray equipment and checking passes with colour codes.
  • With or without an aid, being able to hear radio and telephone communications, audio signals emitted by security equipment, and an average conversational human voice at a distance of two and a half meters in a quiet room.
  • Being physically fit to cope with long periods of physical activity, including standing, sitting, bending, walking and to have full hand dexterity. We will also check your blood pressure.
  • Being free from dependence on alcohol or illegal substances; colleagues taking prescribed drugs will be considered on an individual basis to ensure that their ability to undertake their duties would not be adversely affected.
  • You should be aware that we have a zero-tolerance approach to the use of illegal drugs and alcohol all colleagues, regardless of role, are subject to both random and ‘for cause’ drug and alcohol tests. Should a colleague breach our Substance Abuse Policy they may be dismissed for gross misconduct.
